Working Group 3:
Tidal Measurements and Geodynamic Research

Chairman: Ricardo Vieira

Report of the Working Group 3:

- Status December 1995 -
by Ricardo Vieira

||||| 1. Terms of Reference

The main goal of WG3 is clarified in the recommendation no. 1 of the Helsinki Earth Tide Symposium (1989): The ETC, recognizing the possibilities of an application of earth tide measurements within geodynamics, including earthquake and volvano monitoring research, recommends the formation of a working group on Tidal Measurments and Geodynamic Research.

||||| 2. Activity Report

a) Since sixties several permanent laboratories with tidal and other geophysics instruments, were installed in different countries. Walferdange (Luxembourg), Valle de los Caidos (Spain), Huangshi (R.P. China), are examples of these stations. One characteristic is common to all of them: geodynamic research and techniques developped.

b) Since 1980 begin a very strong collaboration between scientific persons of the different laboratories and also interchange of experiences and technology.

c) Differentes projects, mainly financed by European Community and bilateral agreements, permit, in the last five or six years a better collaboration and permanen contact between specialists from tidal, volcanism, seismology and geophysical instrumentation. This collaboration was fundamental for to create and to develop the International Laboratory of Lancarote Island, where more than sixty different sensors are running permanently, including practically all the tidal and geophysical signals possible recording today.

||||| 3. Meetings Related with the Working Group

a) October 1990, Walferdange (Luxembourg): "Geodynamic instrumentation applied to volcanic areas" sponsored by European Center for Geodynamics and Seismology (ECGS).

b) Two workshops were organized; the first one in Lanzarote Island (1991) and the second one in Aussoie (France, 1991). The main goal of these meetings were an open discussion about sensors, data acquisition systems, software, power supply, transmission of infor- mation, possible places for installations of the different instru- ments, etc...

c) In 1993, also in agreement with the ECGS, a workshop about New challenges for gedesy in volcanoes monitoring was organized in Walferdange. On November 1995, a workshop on Short thermal and hydrological signatures related to tectonic activities took place in Walferdange; several members of our WG participated and topics related with our activities were discussed.

d) In 1996, May or October, we are planning to organize an open workshop in Lanzarote with end of to know the progress of the WG3 and to prepare the participation in the Earth Tide Symposium of 1997 in Brussels.
